WP Tutorial: As we’ve discussed in other posts, by default, WordPress treats your website as a “blog” and shows your newest posts on the front page, unless you set a page as a static front page.
In a separate tutorial, we’ve also addressed how to create a WordPress blog page to show your most recent blog posts.
Regardless of your choice to make your most recently published posts display on your blog page or front page, With WordPress you can specify the number of blog post entries to show on these pages (e.g. “1,” “3,” “12” etc.)
Your site will then display your blog posts on your blog page up to the maximum number of items you have specified, even if your website contains more blog posts than the number you have set to display.
The ability to set the number of posts display on your WordPress site has many practical uses.
As an example, you can set your blog to show only the most recent blog post item you have published. This is useful, if you are promoting a different limited-time offer each month, a “deal of the day” type of offer, publish the latest results of a local sports competition, post upcoming events, set up a quarterly community page for updates and announcements, etc…
Or, you can use this feature to fill an empty space on your blog page if your sidebar menu runs too long.
Whatever the reason, WordPress gives you the flexibility to specify the number of posts that will display on main blog page.
In this step-by-step tutorial, you are going to learn how to set easily the number of blog posts you want to show on your blog.
Tutorial: How Many Blog Posts Show Up On Your Blog Page
WordPress allows you to choose how many published blog post entries you would like displayed on the blog page.
How many posts you want to display is completely up to you. There is no limit to this amount.
Note: Select a reasonable setting that won’t slow down your page as the entries load on your website. Later on you can always change it to increase or decrease the number of posts displayed. (<15 anymore may affect loading speed)
TTo specify how many blog post entries you want to show on your website’s blog page, go to your WordPress navigation menu and select Settings > Reading.
Configure the options in the Reading Settings panel as per the screenshot below:
How To Modify The Number Of Posts Showing On The Main Page
If you are using your website as a blog (i.e. the default install option), where the main page shows your newest published items, then set your options as shown below:

- Blog pages show at most: X posts (where “X” is the number of posts that you want displayed – e.g. 1,3,5,10, 15 etc …)

Specifying The Number Of Posts Displayed On The Blog Page
If you are using your WordPress build as a website, where the main page displays a fixed page and your newest posts show up on a separate blog page, then set your options as below:
- Front page displays: Set this to A static page, then select Posts page: > your Blog Page from the drop down menu
- Blog pages show at most: X posts X posts (where “X” is the number of items you want showing – i.e. 1,3,5,7,10, 15 etc …)
